VCAT™ · Virtual Cognitive-Aware Trainer

Not a simulator. An AI firearms instructor.

Measures vision, attention, trigger control and decision timing. Shot by shot.

VCAT, the Virtual Cognitive-Aware Trainer, is an AI-powered firearms training system developed by Eyeviation. It was built for elite military units and has since been adapted for law enforcement and professional shooting ranges.

Where a simulator shows where the shot landed, VCAT shows why. It quantifies the complete shooting cycle, including the visual and cognitive processes an instructor cannot see, and turns them into feedback the shooter can act on immediately.

What it is

The layer traditional training never measures.

Stance, vision, attention, trigger control and decision-making together decide where a round goes. On a live range an instructor sees the target and the shooter's posture, and has to guess at the rest.

VCAT combines a real-time virtual range with eye tracking, bio-sensing and AI analytics. It monitors the shooting mechanics as they happen and measures cognitive performance during the shot, so errors are diagnosed in minutes rather than over months of repetition.

The technology is military-grade: developed with and trusted by armies, elite units and intelligence organisations, and delivered to law enforcement and commercial ranges at the same performance standard.

  • Analyses the entire shooting cycle, not only the hit.
  • Eye tracking and bio-sensing measure what the shooter sees and attends to.
  • Objective, repeatable feedback in real time.
  • Fundamentals that transfer directly to live fire.

Feedback

See your shot in 3D.

After each shot VCAT plays back a 3D visualisation of what happened: head pose, eye behaviour, weapon movement and trigger press, next to personalised tips to improve technique.

Because the shooter sees the cause instead of only the result, improvement does not depend on repetitive practice. The virtual range also allows routines that most live ranges cannot offer.

What VCAT measures

Four layers of every shot.

The same four layers are measured for every shooter and every shot, which makes progress comparable between sessions, instructors and locations.

Visuo-mechanics

How eyes, head and weapon line up: where the shooter looks, and when, throughout the shooting cycle.

Trigger control

What the trigger press does to the weapon in the moment before the shot breaks.

Micro-movement

Stability of stance and grip, down to the small movements that open up a group.

Cognitive performance

Attention and decision timing under load, measured with eye tracking and bio-sensing.

One platform, multiple missions

One core technology, adapted to how you train.

VCAT is delivered in versions for the military, law enforcement and professional ranges. The measurement is the same; the training programme is tailored to the task.

01

Military

Developed and validated with elite military units. Trains the cognitive and visual skills behind combat-level marksmanship, with consistent, data-driven improvement.

02

Law enforcement

Baseline and corrective training for recruits, remediation and pre-qualification, plus recurring proficiency cycles and warm-up sessions that support live fire without extra range time or ammunition.

03

Professional ranges

A warm-up before live fire and a marksmanship programme alongside your own instructors. Shooters arrive on the lane focused and with a goal; instructors correct errors immediately and at scale.

Why it pays off

More training effect from the same people, time and budget.

Efficiency

A range in a box.

VCAT needs minimal space and no permanent installation. One instructor can manage up to 12 trainees, and a 30-minute session delivers more than 200 virtual rounds.

It does not replace live fire or the instructor. It makes live fire more effective, and gives the instructor the measurements to correct fundamentals before rounds are spent on them.

Covered by defence and firearms media.

VCAT has been covered by Janes, Soldier Systems, EDR Magazine, Soldat & Technik, InfoDefensa and Shooting Illustrated, among others, from its unveiling in August 2025 to its introduction to civilian ranges at SHOT Show 2026.

A Shooting Illustrated reviewer wrote that a few minutes with VCAT taught him more about his shooting than "the past decade and a half".

FAQ

Questions we get asked.

Is VCAT a shooting simulator?

No. A simulator recreates a scenario and scores the hit. VCAT is an instructor: it measures vision, attention, trigger control, stability and timing during the shot and tells the shooter what to change.

Does it replace live fire?

No. It prepares for live fire and makes it more effective. Used as a warm-up or as fundamentals training, it reduces the number of live rounds needed to reach and keep a standard.

What do I need to run it?

Minimal space and no permanent installation. The shooter wears a headset and uses a training weapon; the instructor follows and coaches from a tablet.

How quickly do shooters improve?

According to the supplier, improvement begins in under 20 minutes. Because the system shows the cause of an error, correction does not depend on high round counts.

Who is it for?

Military units, law enforcement agencies and professional shooting ranges. VCAT is available to selected professional organisations; contact us to discuss your use case.
